Zone one : a novel [ang.]
ACCLAIMED NOVELIST COLSON WHITEHEAD TURNS HIS CRITICAL EYE TO THE END OF THEWORLD WITH A DAZZLING PORTRAIT OF MODERN CIVILIZATION IN ALL ITS WRETCHED,SHAMBLING GLORY.
In this singular take on the post-apocalyptic horrornovel, a pandemic has devastated the planet. The plague has sorted humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead.
The worst of the plague is over, and the provisional goverment in Buffalo orchestrates the
return to civilization with the aid of therapy seminars, corporate sponsorships, and the uplifting anthem "Stop! Can you hear the eagle roar? (Theme from "Reconstruction")". The resettlement of Manhattan is a top priority. Armed forced stationed in Chinatown`s Fort Wonton have successfully reclaimed the island south of Canal Street - aka Zone One - but pockets of plague-ridden squatters remain.
While the military has eliminated the most dangerous of the infected, teams of civilian volunteersare tasked with clearing out a more innocuous variety-the malfunctioning "stragglers", who exist in a cataconic state, transfixed by their former lives. The janitor stands in the middle of an abandoned cafeteria, eternally swabbing the same square of linoleum. The psychiatrist languishes in her office, waiting for a patient who will never arrive. The summer intern bends over a copy machine searching for the source of a paper jam will never be fixed.
Mark Spitz is a member of one of the three-person civilian sweeper units clearing lower Manhattan building by building, block by block. Alternating between haunting flashbacks of Spitz`s desperate fight for survival during the worst of the outbreak and his present narrative, ZONE ONE unfolds over three surreal days in which Mark Spitz is occupied with the mundane mission of straggler removal, the rigors of Post-Apocalyptic Stress Disorder (PASD), and the impossible task of coming to terms with a fallen world. And the things start to go wrong...
At once a chilling horror story that embraces the pleasures of the genre and a literary novel by a contemporary master, ZONE ONE is a profound portrait of a man grappling with loss and loneliness.
